On Saturday, 5 October, MADEC Supported Independent Living resident Skye took home silver in her division in 3×3 basketball at the Central Queensland (CQ) Special Olympics.
She competed with the Mackay Fire team, whose mission is to bring sport, joy, and inclusion to people with intellectual disabilities and autism. The three-day tournament included table tennis, bocce, ten-pin bowling, and basketball, with the 2024 State Games taking place later this month.
A talented sportswoman, Skye frequently participates in a range of sports including skateboarding, basketball, swimming, football, and wakeboarding. A personal goal of hers is to attend a State of Origin match, and earlier this year she benefited from the coaching guidance of Queensland State of Origin legend Martin Bella as part of the Mackay All Abilities NRL team. The team were victorious in August at Queensland Country Bank Stadium as part of the Endeavour Cup and played as the curtain-raiser for the North Queensland Cowboys v. Canberra Raiders NRL clash.

Skye is cheered on in all her sporting games by MADEC Support Workers and her Supported Independent Living housemates. From the entire team at MADEC, congratulations Skye on your silver medal — we can’t wait to see what you achieve in 2024 and beyond!
